Routine Vet Visits When Managing Dog Obesity

Most dog owners don’t notice their pet gaining weight until it becomes a health concern. Routine veterinary visits are necessary for preventing and managing obesity in dogs. As National Pet Obesity Awareness Day rolls around this October, it’s a great time to check in on your dog’s weight and overall wellness. 4Paws Mobile Veterinary Services brings expert veterinary care and guidance on pet weight management to the Redwood City area.

Health Risks for Overweight and Obese Dogs

Obesity in dogs is often gradual and subtle. A few extra pounds may go unnoticed but can quietly increase the risk for serious conditions like diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and a shorter lifespan. Some health conditions may not be reversible, even if your canine companion does end up losing the extra weight.

How do you know if your dog is overweight or obese? While confirmation should come from a veterinarian, you can use a Body Condition Score (BCS) chart for dogs. This will give a general idea of where your pet’s weight falls.

What Happens During a Weight-Focused Vet Visit?

A veterinarian will usually start a vet visit for weight management with a physical exam. They may also use a BCS chart! They assess your dog’s shape, muscle tone, and fat coverage. Your companion will get weighed. If you are bringing your pet to a new vet, make sure to give them previous records so that the veterinarian can see your pet’s weight over time. The vet will then let you know if your dog is at a healthy weight or needs some weight management.

Based on breed, age, lifestyle, and medical history, the veterinarian will discuss proper food along with treat allowances for your dog. They’ll talk about safe, enjoyable ways to increase physical activity, even for indoor or senior dogs. If you have any questions, ask the vet. Weight loss for canines will be a gradual process, but with professional guidance, it can be done safely.

When Should I Call a Vet for a Weight Check-In?

    • You’re unsure of how much or what to feed your dog
    • Your canine seems less active or reluctant to move
    • You can’t easily feel their ribs or see a waistline
    • Treats are becoming a frequent substitute for meals or attention

Even if your dog seems “just a little chunky,” it’s always better to act early. Canines are good about picking up on habits. Build good ones sooner rather than later!
